FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between standard dog food and veterinary diet food, and do I need a prescription?

Some dog food is reserved for veterinary distribution only. This is due to very specific ingredients being included designed to assist with certain health conditions. A vet will require proof of a dog's condition before prescribing these specialist foods.

AVM-GSL pet foods however do not require any prescription from a vet and are for general sale. These general foods can still help manage certain conditions but do not include formulas that might have adverse effects if mis-prescribed.

If a product is for veterinary distribution it will explicitly state this and require additional information to be provided.

How do I choose the right food for my dog's health condition?

If you are ever unsure what food or type of food to feed your dog who has a specific condition, always consult your vet. A lot of foods are designed to support various health conditions but knowing if it will help your dog specifically is a case by case basis.

Should I feed my dog wet food, dry food, or a combination of both?

Most of the time whether a dog prefers wet or dry food is purely down to their personal tastes. It may be beneficial to feed your dog a mixture of wet and dry to keep them interested or if the foods contain various beneficial ingredients.

If however for example your dog was experiencing tooth or gum issues then perhaps a wet food diet would suit them better to ease any eating pain. These scenarios are always best discussed with your vet.

How do I transition my dog to a new food without causing digestive upset?

A slow introduction and transition period is always best for your pet when changing their food. If your pet has had the same diet for a long time it can be a shock to their system when changing the ingredients up. They always need time to process these changes, the smaller the change the better. For more information, check out this article from the PDSA Health Hub.

Are these foods suitable for all breeds and sizes, or are some breed-specific?

Yes some foods will be breed, size, sex and age specific. Be sure to always check product descriptions for this information to make sure your dog is receiving the appropriate amount and diet of food. If you are ever unsure always ask your vet, or check the manufacturers website for more specific details.
