FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose between a spot-on, tablet, spray, or collar for flea and tick treatment?
The type of flea treatment that is best for your pet is entirely dependant on what type of parasite or infestation they are experiencing. Usually a mix of preventatives and treatments is best such as a flea spray for the home to prevent the spread whilst a direct treatment is applied to the pet. This as always is something best discussed with your vet if you are ever unsure.
How do I know which size or weight variant to choose for my dog?
Parasite treatments are almost always based on the size of the animal it is designed to treat. This is usually due to the strength of the ingredients present and how effective they would be. Be sure to always look for specifications of breed, weight and size when selecting a treatments for this reason. If you are ever unsure, consult your vet or check the manufacturers website directly.
Do I need to treat my home as well as my dog?
If your pet has an active infestation, it may be beneficial to use a product like a home flea spray to make sure the infestation does not spread. Fleas for example can nest in a variety of fabrics so removing them before they become a further problem can be beneficial. This however should always be in conjunction with treating the source which is usually a pet's skin or coat with an anti parasite treatment. If you are ever unsure about how best to handle flea or worm infestations, always consult your vet.
Can I use a flea treatment and a worming treatment at the same time?
This depends on the treatments themselves and what active ingredients they include. A lot of treatments for flea & worming are combined to treat both in one application but if you are using two separate treatments it is best to consult you vet.
What's the difference between AVM-GSL and NFA-VPS products, and can I buy both without a prescription?
The difference between AVM-GSL and NFA-VPS products us usually the strength of the ingredients and the potential risk of adverse effects for pets. AVM-GSL products are for general sale and do not require any further information to be purchased.
NFA-VPS products however require the approval of a trained SQP (Suitably Qualified Person). This approval involves the customer supplying key information about their pet for the SQP to check against the product they are wishing to purchase.
These two categories make up most of the pet pharmaceutical retail products but other legal categories such as POM-V and POM-VPS require additional processes.
