FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a vet prescription to buy specialist or therapeutic cat food?
Some cat food is reserved for veterinary distribution only. This is due to very specific ingredients being included designed to assist with certain health conditions. A vet will require proof of a cat's condition before prescribing these specialist foods.
AVM-GSL pet foods however do not require any prescription from a vet and are for general sale. These general foods can still help manage certain conditions but do not include formulas that might have adverse effects if mis-prescribed.
If a product is for veterinary distribution it will explicitly state this and require additional information to be provided.
My cat has kidney disease — which foods in this range are suitable?
A vet is always best to consult if you are concerned about your cat potentially eating something that may not help their condition. Many foods available here are however specially formulated to support cats with kidney disease. This will always be stated as such in the product title or description.
For more specific search results you can find filter options down the left-hand side of the product grid. There you will see an option for "Health Complication" to help make your search a little easier.
Should I feed my cat wet food, dry food, or a mix of both?
Most of the time whether a cat prefers wet or dry food is purely down to their personal tastes. It may be beneficial to feed your cat a mixture of wet and dry to keep them interested or if the foods contain various beneficial ingredients.
If however for example, your cat was experiencing tooth or gum issues then perhaps a wet food diet would suit them better to ease any eating pain. These scenarios are always best discussed with your vet.
How do I transition my cat to a new food, especially a specialist diet?
A slow introduction and transition period is always best for your pet when changing their food. If your pet has had the same diet for a long time it can be a shock to their system when changing the ingredients up. They always need time to process these changes, the smaller the change the better. For more information, check out this article from the PDSA Health Hub.
Are there foods in this range suitable for neutered cats?
Yes you can find a range of food options designed specifically for neutered and sterilised cats. To find these more easily simply use the "Health Complication" filter down the left side of the product grid and select "Sterilised".
